The DC Universe has been without a Justice League since these heroes were tragically killed in the lead-up to Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. Even after the multiverse was saved, the Justice League remained disbanded, leaving the Titans to attempt to fill the void. But finally, after more than two years, the Justice League is returning as part of DC's comic book line.

The news came at DC's "Absolute Power" panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where we learned that the Absolute Power crossover will pave the way for a new monthly series called Justice League Unlimited. That series will reunite Absolute Power writer Mark Waid and artist Dan Mora.

Justice League Unlimited shares a name with the fan-favorite animated series of the early '00s, and that doesn't appear to be mere coincidence. While the book will feature a core cast of traditional Justice Leaguers like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Flash, just like in the JLU cartoon, numerous DC heroes will cycle in and out of the picture. The covers for issue #1 shown at the panel featured Captain Atom, Black Lightning and Star Sapphire.

Justice League Unlimited will also return the team to their orbital Watchtower. Darkseid looks to be the overarching antagonist of the series, with panelist Scott Snyder teasing that DC's heroes will have to adapt to respond to this all-powerful villain achieving a new form.

JLU is a key piece of DC's "All In" initiative, which aims to appeal to new and old readers alike with a combination of new series and fresh jumping-on points for existing books. "All In" also hinges on the debut of DC's new Absolute Universe, which emphasizes modernized, reimagined takes on iconic DC heroes in the vein of Marvel's Ultimate Universe (stay tuned to IGN for a deeper dive on what to expect from the Absolute Universe line).
