Gaho, the popular Korean singer, composer, and producer, has teamed up with Kave—Jisang (guitar), Hyun (keyboard), Ownr (keyboard, DJ), and Kekinu (drums)—as its frontman and lead vocalist—releasing its debut EP, Flight of Ideas.
Kave, which stands for Kings Always Have Veiled Egos, is a rock band and production team that oozes unbridled energy, inventive sound, and unfettered artistic vision. Gaho explained the origin of Kave as the reunion of his high school and college friends during the media preview in Seoul on July 23. Although the group first formed to make music, an official press statement reveals that Kave came into being in response to a proposal for playing musical instruments that was put forward. With the release of Flight of Ideas, Gaho expressed his hope that fans and listeners would be able to distinguish between Gaho, the solo artist, and Kave’s Gaho and appreciate the various musical genres that will be explored in future releases.
Flight of Ideas is the limitless creativity that can ensue from talented musicians coming together to produce a solid sound that is very personal and also, in general, very resonant. The EP features seven self-composed and self-arranged tracks: “Venom,” “Legend,” “Hurricane,” “Dangerous,” “Avant,” “Crazy Crazy,” and “Die for U.” “Legend,” the album’s title track, is a hybrid electronic rock tune boasting an impressive and catchy hook with a strong focus on inner conflict and personal struggles in the lyrics, accentuated by the rich vocals. Kave has also unveiled a video for “Venom,” produced by the well-known ensemble Team Us.
As for “Legend”—it’s a powerful one—that almost immediately commands attention—setting the tone for the album on the whole. In an effective fusion of driving rhythms, searing guitar work, and Gaho’s impassioned vocals, I feel the track is like something of a rallying cry and a statement. The intense energy pulsing throughout the piece is, of course, a sonic manifestation of Kave’s sense of self, and its identity.
Bringing his deft songwriting sensibilities and emotive vocal delivery to the table, Gaho seamlessly marries his artistry this time with the dynamic interplay of his bandmates for a synergistic blend that’s nothing short of spectacular. Once again, the group’s collective musicianship is on display with Flight of Ideas, mixing rock ingredients and adrenaline for a distinctive roar, a unique sonic experience in the Korean rock music scene.
Gaho became a household name with the hit song “Start Over” from Itaewon Class (2020). Other successful K-drama OSTs that followed include “Wish” from Stranger 2 (2020), “Running” from Start-Up (2020), “Memories” from Jirisan (2021), and “Yellow Light” from King the Land (2023). Kave’s rest of the members, meanwhile, have been actively producing his songs as well as for other notable acts and artists in Korea.
The members’ diverse experiences in music have given them a breadth of understanding and expertise in making and disseminating music that’s in line with what they want to create—as in Flight of Ideas—and with that, Kave is poised to impact the Korean music scene. Kick-starting the journey, as part of the iconic Incheon Pentaport Music Festival on August 2, 2024, Kave will make one of its first official appearances.
