Gearbox Software is just days away from the premiere of its live-action Borderlands movie, but that isn’t stopping it from planning for a sequel.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford spoke about the studio’s ambitions during an interview with GamesRadar+. While its flagship looter-shooter series is only just starting to dip its toes into the world of film, Pitchford is confident that Gearbox will be able to announce a second Borderlands movie before too long. In fact, he says a reveal could come “before the end of the year. We’ll see. Maybe sooner.”

“I have the biggest and best team that I've ever had working on what we know is exactly what our fans want from us - so I'm very, very thrilled,” Pitchford added. “I can't wait to talk about it! I wish I could just gush right now because we've got so much to say!”

This is all before the Borderlands movie has even had the chance to come to theaters, which it’s scheduled to do in early August. The film features an all-star cast, including Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Jack Black as Claptrap, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, and Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina. Though trailers have revealed an adaptation that puts a spin on some familiar Borderlands elements, it also appears to tell a story that will fit right in with the violent video game series it’s based on.

How a sequel could continue the narrative with another film’s worth of story is anyone’s guess, but there is at least plenty Borderlands lore to pull from. We’ll hopefully learn more about what Gearbox is cooking up in the near future.

In the same interview, Pitchford also teased another Borderlands game, suggesting its announcement, too, might be imminent: "I’m confident that our fans are going to be very, very happy with the next video game project when we are ready to announce it. And I will tell you that we’re not going to be making people wait for a long time before we announce it.”

The Borderlands movie rolls into theaters on August 9, so we'll have to wait and see if it comes with any ties to a potential sequel. In the meantime, you can read about how Greenblatt channeled Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn when portraying Tiny Tina. The series’ future in games, meanwhile, is secured, as Take-Two Interactive purchased Gearbox and announced a new game in the franchise just months ago.
