Senior BJP leader from Tripura Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed as Telangana Governor.
Hailing from the Tripura royal family, Varma served as deputy chief minister of Tripura between 2018 and 2023 when he lost the Assembly elections. He created a record of sorts by becoming the first person from the northeastern state to be elevated to the post of Governor.
“Life is full of surprises,” he said on the social media platform X reacting to his appointment as fourth Governor of Telangana since its formation in 2014.
Verma thanked President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him the opportunity to serve the people of Telangana. He said it was a recognition for the people of Tripura as for the first time since Independence, a person from the state was elevated to a high Constitutional post.
Senior BJP leader from Maharashtra, Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde, has been appointed the Governor of Rajasthan, succeeding Kalraj Mishra. Veteran BJP leader and former RSS pracharak, Om Prakash Mathur, is the new Governor of Sikkim. Former Union labour and employment minister, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, is the new Governor of Jharkhand, replacing C.P. Radhakrishnan, who also held additional charge of Telangana. Radhakrishnan has been appointed the new Governor of Maharashtra, succeeding Ramesh Bais.
Lakshman Prasad Acharya has been appointed the Governor of Assam with additional charge of Manipur, replacing Anusuiya Uikye. Gulab Chand Kataria has replaced Banwarilal Purohit as the Governor of Punjab. Acharya has also been appointed the administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
Former IAS officer K. Kailashnathan, a trusted aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been appointed Lt. Governor of Puducherry, effective from the date he assumes office. Kailashnathan, the chief principal secretary to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, stepped down on June 30 after holding the post for over a decade following his retirement.
Former Lok Sabha member from Assam, Ramen Deka, has been appointed the Governor of Chhattisgarh, and C.H. Vijayashankar, the former Lok Sabha member from Mysore in Karnataka, is the new Governor of Meghalaya.
These appointments will take effect from the dates they assume their respective offices, the President's House statement added.
