Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 remasters leak at Comic-Con

The classic Legacy Of Kain series is getting a new remaster collection, as hopes return of a new entry.

It’s been over 20 years since the last Legacy Of Kain game – Legacy Of Kain: Defiance – was released, but the series finally appears to be coming back to life.

After developer Crystal Dynamics was sold to Embracer Group in 2022, fans have hoped for a revival of the fantasy action series. While no game has emerged since then, a Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver prequel graphic novel is set to come out later this year – suggesting the IP is planning some sort of comeback.

It seems this graphic novel, titled The Dead Shall Rise, will coincide with remastered versions of Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2, according to a display at San Diego Comic-Con.

As spotted by users on ResetEra, plaques underneath statues of characters Kain and Raziel, which are set to come out in August, show a logo for an unannounced ‘Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered’.

It’s probably no coincidence that Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver celebrates its 25th anniversary on August 16, so it’s likely we could hear some sort of announcement then.

According to reports, these signs have since been removed from the show floor – so clearly someone’s let the cat out of the bag by mistake, but they do seem to be proper logos and not just plain text.

There have been rumours of a new Legacy Of Kain project since October 2022, when Crystal Dynamics sent out a fan survey to gauge interest in the series.

Following the survey, which received over 100,000 responses, Crystal Dynamics CEO Phil Rogers said: ‘Rest assured, we hear you loudly and clearly, and we will continue to to update you on the what if possibilities ahead for Legacy Of Kain in the future.’

Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver originally came out on the PlayStation and PC in 1999. It’s technically the second game in the series, following 1996’s Blood Omen: Legacy Of Kain, but the Soul Reaver games are very different third person adventure titles.

At the moment, Crystal Dynamics, is working on another Tomb Raider sequel and is co-developing the Perfect Dark reboot, alongside The Initiative.

They’re a big enough studio that they should have the capacity to work on remasters at the same time but any new game would likely have to wait until Tomb Raider and Perfect Dark are finished.
