Someone at NetherRealm really loves Terminator (NetherRealm)

NetherRealm has revealed its plans for Mortal Kombat 1 over the next year, including a new story expansion and Scream’s Ghostface.

If you were wondering why Mortal Kombat’s presence at Evo 2024 was weirdly low key, it’s because developer NetherRealm were holding back announcements for San Diego Comic-Con.

The studio held a panel dedicated to Mortal Kombat 1 at the event on Saturday, July 27, where it revealed new story expansion Khaos Reigns which includes the title’s next wave of DLC characters.

Like Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath expansion, Khaos Reigns is a story add-on which picks up after events in the base game, where Havik was teased as the next big villain.

This expansion also comes with six new characters in Kombat Pack 2. As already outed by leaks, this includes returning fighters Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot, along with guest additions Conan The Barbarian, Terminator 2’s T-1000, and Ghostface from Scream.

Terminator 2 actor Robert Patrick will reprise his role as the T-1000, while Roger L. Jackson will return as the voice of Ghostface. Judging by his omission on the press release, it seems Arnold Schwarzenegger will not voice Conan The Barbarian and there’ll be a soundalike instead, like the T-800 in Mortal Kombat 11.

Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot will be available when the expansion launches on September 24, with the three guest characters set to be released at a later date.

Up Next

For some, the most exciting addition might be animalities, which are animal versions of the classic fatality finishing moves. This is the first time they have returned in almost 30 years, following their debut in 1995’s Mortal Kombat 3, and they look delightfully messed up.

Several of these animal transformation are shown off in the full trailer (warning: it’s very gory), with Rain turning into a pufferfish and exploding enemies from the inside, while Mileena morphs into pink praying mantis for an especially gory feast.

The Khaos Reigns expansion will cost £39.99 across PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X, while the Nintendo Switch version is £29.99. This is the only way to get access to Kombat Pack 2, which will not be sold separately.

If you haven’t yet invested in the first Kombat Pack, which includes DLC characters Omni-Man, Quan Chi, Peacemaker, Ermac, Homelander, and Takeda Takahashi, there’s also a Khaos Reigns bundle which costs an additional £10.

It’s important to note that this Khaos Reigns expansion doesn’t include the Mortal Kombat 1 base game, so overall, it’s a pretty sizeable investment.

If you pre-order the expansion, you’ll also get access to four additional skins: Wedding Scorpion, Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat 3, Empress Mileena, and a classic ninja outfit.
