The waiting is over and the 2024 Summer Olympics are here, with all eyes focussed on Paris for its first Games in 100 years.

Spectators have already been treated to plenty of action after the football, rugby sevens, handball and shooting competitions got underway in the week.

But last night’s spectacular – if soggy – opening ceremony well and truly kick-started the greatest sporting event of them all and the stage is set for what promises to be a fortnight of compelling drama involving over 10,000 athletes from 206 nations across the globe, so buckle up…

European time trial champion Josh Tarling could get his hands on Team GB’s first medal this afternoon.

There is also swimming, volleyball, skateboarding, dressage, tennis to look forward to in today’s jam-packed schedule, in which a total of 14 gold medals are up for grabs across the Channel.

We’ll be across it all here at Metro.co.uk.
