Rick and Morty: The Anime writer and director Takashi Sano will teleport viewers to a new realm of animation in just a few weeks, and that means telling new stories about some of the franchise’s most important characters.

As described during a San Diego Comic-Con panel today, Morty specifically is one character given more to do in the anime spinoff show. Sano says taking a trip to new pockets in the multiverse opened up the opportunity to explore fresh themes.

“So, I wanted to focus on Morty having a bit of a story of romance throughout the series and use that as a springboard for a story that connects all of the different universes, so I introduced a new character who you got a glimpse of…” Sano says when describing a new character shown at SDCC. “You can see the respect that I paid to the original series because I didn’t want to make an anime series for anime fans, but something that everyone could enjoy.”

Sano has experience working on other anime, such as Tower of God, Vinland Saga, and Lupin the Third. His roots in Japanese animation run deep, but he never intentionally drew inspiration from other projects that viewers might know when working on the Rick and Morty anime spinoff. As he explained during the panel, “For me, even though it’s titled ‘The Anime,’ I didn’t necessarily set out to make ‘anime.’

Still, some inspiration managed to come crawling out naturally. Sano’s work on Lupin is one element that he feels found its way into Rick and Morty: The Anime.

"But it’s a very naturalistic influence, nothing I was trying to do.

“I’ve drawn a lot of Lupin, so whether I want it or not, I think when the character walks or runs the look comes out.” Sano said when asked if viewers should look out for references to other popular anime. “And just hearing the question, I see the traces of Lupin in how Morty walks and runs… But it’s a very naturalistic influence, nothing I was trying to do.”

Rick and Morty: The Anime premieres on Adult Swim on August 15, 2024, at midnight. You can see everything else announced at SDCC 2024 right here.
