Sure, getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is great, but nothing quite says you’ve made it like having a bin lorry named after you.
Having reached peak fame, comedian Romesh Ranganathan has, indeed, had a bin lorry branded in his honour – and the name it’s been given is brilliant.
The 46-year-old is the inspiration behind a new bin lorry named Romesh Recyclenathan, after a group of school children in Crawley, south-east England, were asked to present him with a series of Romesh-themed names.
Speaking on the Perfect Day with Jessica Knappett podcast, Romesh shared: ‘They emailed me saying, “Here are the names we’ve settled on but we don’t want you to be annoyed so can you tell us which you prefer?”
‘I don’t know what your rights are when a bin van is named after you.’
Romesh subsequently joked that the lorry’s fate would depend on his own success.
He quipped: ‘Obviously, I’m going to decline in popularity and work rate and I wonder if I’m going to get another email going, “Romesh it’s time… just to let you know we’re retiring Romesh Recyclenathan”.’
Romesh first started rising to prominence in 2014 when he presented Newsjack on Radio 4 Extra before appearing on The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice.
He’s since gone on to appear in countless TV shows, including 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Would I Lie to You?, The Last Leg, Have I Got News for You, QI, and Mock the Week.
As if all of that wasn’t enough, Romesh co-hosted the 2023 TV Baftas alongside fellow comic Rob Beckett.
Continuing to entertain packed crowds with his stand-up routines, Romesh headed on a sold-out UK tour this spring, playing dates up and down the country.
Alongside his comedy and presenting, Romesh hosts a weekly radio show called For The Love of Hip-Hop on BBC Radio 2 and, earlier this year replaced Claudia Winkleman in the lunchtime slot.
He took up DJing during the pandemic as a means of curing his boredom.
Speaking about turning his hand to DJing at the height of Covid, Romesh recoiled out of cringe.
He told the BBC: ‘At the beginning of the first lockdown, I got a load of DJ equipment and I started to become this, sort of, tragic… this tragic DJ in my garage, basically – with a view to my target: I’ve set a goal for myself of playing out somewhere when we’re back to normal in October. So that’s my target.’
Despite this, Romesh admitted to being a bit embarrassed about his lockdown lifestyle.
The comedy star said: ‘I don’t know if that’s one of the most tragic things I’ve ever said.’
Well, it may seem tragic to Romesh, but this funnyman will always have the last laugh thanks to his success.
Due to his stints presenting The Weakest Link, appearing on panel shows, and touring his comedy, Romesh has an estimated net worth of £2.4million.
Part of this wealth came from inheriting a pub from his father, which formed the basis of his sitcom, The Reluctant Landlord.
At least he’s got someone to share it all with, though, as Romesh is married to Leesa, whom he met when they first worked together in 2009 before his career really took off.
They also have three children together; Theo, Alex, and Charlie.
