Spencer Matthews has declared he ‘wasn’t a fan’ of Made in Chelsea while starring on the show.
The 35-year-old made his name on the E4 reality series, starring in its debut season in 2011 and going on to appear on it until leaving nine seasons later in 2015.
After that, Spencer went on to appear on other reality shows including The Jump, where he met wife Vogue Williams, and Celebrity MasterChef.
However nearly a decade after leaving Made in Chelsea, Spencer has not held back when describing what he thinks of the show.
‘I wasn’t a fan of the show when I was doing it,’ he revealed.
‘I’m aware of how popular Made In Chelsea is and no matter what I do I will always be connected to it. That show carries no weight, it’s an entertainment reality show.
‘If people love it, good for me, but I fell out of love with it a really long time ago. Obviously, it gave me the platform that I now build on and enjoy,’ he added when speaking to OK!
He added: ‘That’s great. The people who created the show are friends of mine, but the show itself became quite toxic for me.’
Spencer also recently spoke to Metro.co.uk about being bombarded by messages from people saying they were concerned about his weight loss, which he slammed as ‘detrimental’.
‘I was surprised that people are so willingly open to be quite rude about people’s appearance,’ he said. ‘It’s more the fact that it all came from women that I found odd’
‘I’m preparing for a world record attempt to where I need to be slimmer. Leave me alone.’
He also hit back at people online in a post about body shaming and shared that he has not seen a single comment on his looks since.
‘As a father and having a daughter in particular, I know that when she grows up if people are being rude about her or her weight online, it’s going to have a really detrimental impact on her,’ he explained.
‘She’s going to struggle with it as any young person might. So I wasn’t reading these comments and going “Oh, this is offensive to me”. It gave me a bit of an overview of how toxic that might feel to young women in particular and I thought I’d like to say something about it.’
Spencer noted he hadn’t seen that much ‘toxicity’ and ‘hatred’ in his inbox since his Made in Chelsea days but hasn’t let the comments bring him down at all.’
Last year also revealed how he initially wanted to take part in Made in Chelsea after seeing how The Hills had changed the lives of people like Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt.
‘I had spent time with Brody and Spencer and saw them being paid $100,000 to turn up to a nightclub they were going to go to anyway and I was 19 and thought “how the hell do I get what they have?” he told Elizabeth Day on her How to Fail podcast.
He also added he didn’t care at all about being liked but got wrapped up in the drama the show required.
‘Without drama the show would have died, and I liked doing it and having the job…but nobody’s lives were as dramatic as the way we were portrayed,’ he said.
But he said: ‘In fact I would do almost anything to avoid drama. I am a very relaxed person who works very hard.’
‘I look back at it and think it became very produced and the outcomes were written in stone.’
Spencer said that after the series started to ‘not feel real’ he eventually decided to walk away after five years as one of its stars.
