New Delhi-based, Nigerian-origin rapper Yung Sammy puts his hip-hop chops to the test across six songs on his debut EP In The Building, released via Desi Trill.

Sammy, who previously released songs with Desi Trill including a remix and “The Intro” on Brown Is Everywhere earlier this year, has already teamed up with the likes of New York City duo Memba on “Mehndi.” To his credit, on In The Building, Sammy proves he’s packing more than just a few bars and leads with his signature line “Yung Sammy in the building,” often heard at his gigs and songs.

Straight off the bat on the six-track EP, Sammy teams up with Karachi-origin, American rapper Bandzo3rd for a fiery song “All In.” More collaborators like desi hip-hop artists BBB, Boyblanck and Urban Poet join the party on the tabla-sampled “Heavy.” Urban Poet rejoins on “G Class” and British singer-songwriter/producer Mumzy Stranger and producer DJ Lyan come in on “Tension Mat Le” to show there’s a few folks Sammy can call on. On his own, songs like “Bounce” and “Baatcheet” are club-friendly bangers with plenty of playfulness in his distinctive Hindi and English flow. There’s even a smattering of Punjabi, which shows Sammy is only expanding his scope to level up.

A press release for the EP says Yung Sammy was inspired by KRS-One’s “discourse on hip hop’s inclusive roots, as highlighted in KRS-One – 50 More Years Of Hip Hop.”

He adds in his statement, “This EP isn’t about fitting into boxes. It’s a fusion of sounds where each track tells a different story. ‘All In,’ featuring Bandzo3rd, is a street anthem where Bandzo and I showcase our styles in what we call jugalbandi in Hindi—a true collaboration of energies. ‘Heavy,’ featuring Urban Poet, BBB, and Boyblanck, stands out as an anthem that embodies our scene—it’s bold and poised to resonate globally, also representing UP-16, a region in India. ‘G-Class’ was the final addition to the EP, where we express our strength and the essence of our scene, akin to the peak performance of a G-Class vehicle. It’s a standout track that captures our essence. ‘Baatcheet,’ is another track that delves into conversational flows, adding another layer to our diverse soundscape.”
