CALGARY — The CPKC Women’s Open was, at one point, a major championship on the LPGA Tour’s schedule. Despite it not having that designation anymore, tournament organizers have kept with the major championship-like setups over the last few years.
And through 36 holes at Earl Grey Golf Club, it’s been more of the same — so it’s no surprise to see how the leaderboard has shaken out so far, with plenty of major pedigree near the top.
American Lauren Coughlin, who has two top-five finishes at majors so far this year, leads by one. At 31, she’s having the best season of her career. The only thing that’s missing is a win.
Coughlin managed to keep her solid play going from Thursday after she opened with a 4-under 68. This marks her first career 36-hole lead.
“Just with how firm it’s getting already — it’s very, very difficult,” Coughlin said of the conditions. “The scores are pretty high and pretty up there, which is like a major for sure.
“I don’t get too down on myself. Always keep fighting. Yeah, when it gets hard, that’s fine to me. I’m going to keep fighting the whole time.”

Coughlin went out in a 3-under 32. She bogeyed the par-4 11th but held on tight with pars the rest of the way.
“I think I really only had one bad swing on 11 tee. Other than that, I feel like I hit everything really, really solid all day. I putted extremely well. My speed control was on pretty much all day,” Coughlin said. “I think (my caddie) told me it was probably a better round than you think you realize because … I felt like I could’ve got a couple more. Again, I hung in there and got a good round out of it.”
Having success at majors is nothing new for Canadian Brooke Henderson, who has won two of the game’s biggest titles. She was very much in the mix early in the day making three birdies in her first four holes. But Henderson’s day was derailed by bogeys on her final four holes, and she finished with a 1-over 73 Friday.
Henderson hit her tee shot off-line on the par-5 15th and couldn’t scramble for par. On No. 16, she three-putted from just off the green. On “The Rink” hole, No. 17, she hit her tee shot well short and couldn’t get up and down. Then, on the closer, she hit a screaming approach through the green and off the grandstand and, again, couldn’t save par.
“Conditions were really tough, so to get that three-birdie stretch was really great,” Henderson told Sportsnet. “Kind of settled me in. Everything was going pretty well and it was nice to be near the top of the leaderboard.
“It stings, the finish a little bit. But hopefully, just go out tomorrow and make a couple birdies early and get it back.”
Henderson is, however, tied for low Canadian through two rounds with Maude-Aimee Leblanc. Alena Sharp, Savannah Grewal and Ellie Szeryk also found the weekend.

Chasing Coughlin at the top of the board are Haeran Ryu and major winner Hannah Green, who are 5 under and tied for second.
Green, a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour already this season, has found herself in a familiar position at the halfway point of the CPKC Women’s Open. She finished tied for fourth at last year’s event in Vancouver.
Green — whose caddie is Canadian — was disappointed in how inconsistent she was a year ago, despite notching a win. She’s been much more pleased with her on-course effort in 2024, and the results have shown.
“It’s just been different this year,” Green said. “Everyone jokingly said, ‘You got married, must be obviously in a good place,’ which I certainly am, but I obviously am feeling very confident in my game and it’s nice to have that obvious experience having won tournaments before.
“I always really enjoy coming to Canada. I played well in Vancouver last year, so hopefully I can do a few better and get my hands on that big trophy.”
Ryu, meanwhile, has four top-five finishes this season, including two in a row. She finished runner-up at last week’s Dana Open and has kept her fine play going this week in Canada.
Among those tied for fourth, and three shots back, are Jennifer Kupcho (who shot a sizzling 5-under 30 for her first nine holes Friday but stumbled home with a 5-over 42 in her second nine), former world No. 1 Lilia Vu and Lydia Ko — who is in the mix for a victory for the fourth time in Canada.

“I think the golf course is playing a lot tougher than when we played practice rounds, so I’m not surprised that the scores aren’t really low,” Ko said.

“Recently 2-under would’ve probably missed the cut or barely made it,” said Rose Zhang, who does indeed sit at 2 under and is tied for seventh. “I think it really shows a true testament to how difficult the course is playing.”
